Have you ever caught yourself making excuses for the excuses you’re about to make? Sounds absurd, right? But we’ve all been there.
The other day, I overheard someone preemptively justifying why they wouldn’t get things done, and it reminded me of how often I used to do the same. My personal favorite? “I’m too busy today, so I won’t have time to make those important calls.”
It’s easy to fall into that trap. I convinced myself that all the “whitespace” in my calendar wasn’t enough to make progress. And then one day, I listened to myself… really listened. And it made me sick.
I realized I was setting myself up for failure by planning my own excuses before even trying. I was using “not busy” as an excuse to claim “too busy.”
Ridiculous.
Here’s the truth: I own me. I own my mind. And while I might not have mastered the skill of accomplishing everything I set out to do, I sure as hell wasn’t going to keep giving myself an out.
The first step was simple but powerful: recognize, reject, and take responsibility for the excuses. No one else was to blame. No one else would swoop in to save me from myself.
The next step? Choose a different action and take it. It wasn’t easy, but that shift in mindset made all the difference. I’m still on the journey, and there’s a long way to go, but the key is that I’ve stopped carrying the weight of those excuses.
Will new excuses pop up? Probably. But I’ll drop them too. Because I’ve learned a valuable lesson: no one’s coming to save me from me.
And let me tell you—no one’s coming to save you either. It’s up to you to own yourself. To own your mind. To make a choice.
So, what are you waiting for?
Drop your excuses before they drop you.
